Oshawa Information

Oshawa is a city in Southern Ontario, Canada, with a population of approximately 140,000 people.  It is located on the Lake Ontario shoreline, about 60 km east of downtown Toronto.

It is considered by many to be the eastern anchor of both the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe. Although it is not part of the Toronto CMA, it does have  its own metropolitan area, which in fact is the fourteenth largest in Canada.

Oshawa's economy has always been led by their automotive industry. General Motors Canada, the Canadian division of General Motors Company, has been a large part. Their headquarters and major assembly plants are located in the city. They also maintain large-scale manufacturing and administrative operations in Oshawa and employs thousands of people.

Although the workforce at General Motors of Canada has lessened in recent years, the company continues to make significant technology and capital investments at its sites in Oshawa, and is still the largest local employer.

Downtown Oshawa continues to struggle despite business improvement efforts and the city's older southern neighborhoods tend to be considerably less affluent than its more suburban northern sections, which are rapidly expanding as Toronto commuters move in. The southern half of the city consists of industrial zones and compact housing, which was designed for early 20th century industrial workers. The northern of the city has more of a "suburban feel" more typical of current tastes.
